BACKGROUND

Alcorn was the nation’s first state-supported institution for the higher education of African Americans.  In addition, it is a co-education, historically black, land-grant institution. Alcorn also has two campuses, one in Lorman and the other in Natchez, MS .

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Alcorn offers associate and baccalaureate degrees in nursing, baccalaureate in health science, and pre-professional programs in physical therapy, medical technology, medicine and dentistry.

 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Alcorn is a liberal arts, science and teacher education public institution with programs in selected professional areas such as business and nursing, and currently offering programs leading to the associate (in nursing only), baccalaureate, master’s and educational specialist degrees.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Alcorn State offers a cooperative education program designed particularly to serve the needs of disadvantaged and limited resource people in Southwest Mississippi .

BACKGROUND

Jackson State University was elevated to University status in 1974, and five years later it was designated as the Urban University of the State of Mississippi .  JSU is a publicly supported institution, with degree programs at the baccalaureate, masters, specialist in education, and doctoral levels. JSU’s mission as a major urban university is to make special efforts to attach academically gifted and non-traditional students in order to maintain and expand the cosmopolitan nature of the student body.

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

JSU offers a program in Alcohol/Drug Studies with specialization in counseling.  This is a graduate program leading to the M.A./M.S. Ed. degree.  JSU also has a strong program in the biological sciences.  The Jackson State Heart study is being conducted at JSU.  The School of Allied Health Sciences has bachelors and masters programs, including healthcare administration (HCA), public health, and communicative disorders. These departments track the School's mission of offering high quality education, community-based and healthcare organization research, consultative and technical assistance statewide and in the Metro Jackson areas. All programs are based in the heart of the state's urban capital and central medical complex, with teaching locations at the University's Health Sciences Campus (Jackson Medical Mall), Main and Universities Center Campuses, and in convenient off-campus clinical sites.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Carnegie Foundation designated Jackson State University as “doctorial/research intensive”.  The School of Science and Technology is actively involved in a cooperative research program with Duke University Marine.  Laboratory in Near-Shore and Biological Oceanography and Marine Biology providing academic and research opportunities for students.  Through an agreement with the University of California Lawrence Berkley Laboratory , JSU seeks to increase the number of able scientist and researchers in minority institutions who have the capacity of contributing to scientific process in areas that address the mission of the U.S. Department of Energy.  In a joint program with Georgia Institute of Technology, it provides an enriched academic program for students preparing for graduate studies in the atmospheric sciences and related biophysical sciences.  JSU also participates in the NIH-funded MARC Honors Undergraduate Research Training Program, preparing trainees to compete successfully for graduate studies leading to the Ph.D. degree in the biomedical sciences. 

 

OTHER ACTIVITIES: 

JSU is the lead institution for the Jackson Heart Study in partnership with Tougaloo College , University of Mississippi Medical Center, NIH Office of Research in Minority Health and NHLBI- National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.  The Jackson Heart Study is a single-site prospective epidemiologic investigation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among African-Americans from the Jackson , Mississippi metropolitan area. A major goal of the Jackson Heart Study is to develop programs to attach minority students to careers in public health and epidemiology. Additionally, the Jackson Heart Study in partnership with the School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is involved in a program entitled the “Jackson Heart Train” which is designed for training research awareness in nursing.

 

OTHER RESEARCH AND CENTERS

JSU has an Interdisciplinary Alcohol/Drug Studies Center, the Beatrice B. Mosley Center for Excellence in Education, the Margaret Walker Alexander Nation Research Center , Technology Transfer Center and the University Computing Center .  Also JSU has federally-sponsored projects from HHS, EPA, Department of Energy, DOD, NASA, education and the Interior. BACKGROUND

Mississippi Valley State University was established in 1946 as Mississippi Vocational College but was not formally opened until 1950.  The expressed purpose of the Institution was to train teachers for rural and elementary schools and to provide vocational training.  In order to reflect the broadening scope and offerings of the Institution, its name was changed to Mississippi Valley State College in 1964.  Under this transition, the Institution became more general purpose in nature while retaining its commitment to provide special higher education opportunities.   As a result, the name of the Institution was changed to Mississippi Valley State University in 1974.  The Institution also has two off campus sites, the Greenwood Center , which opened January 1996, and the Greenville Center , which opened January 2001.

BACKGROUND

Rust is an accredited four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college.  The Institution is the oldest of the eleven Historically Black Colleges and Universities related to the United Methodist Church, the second oldest private college in Mississippi, the oldest historically Black College in the State, and one of the remaining five historically Black Colleges in America founded before 1867.  Rust College was founded by the Freedman’s Aid Society Methodist Episcopal Church, and dedicated to serve students with a variety of academic preparations, through instruction in the humanities, social behavior sciences, natural sciences, business, and education.

 

HEALTH RELATED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The only health related academic program offered at Rust College is a Child Development Program.

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Rust college is a senior liberal arts college which offers degrees in sixteen areas of study including, Associate and Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Arts.  The curriculum has a required general education program, major and minor areas and electives. The Commission on College of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits the Institution to award the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Degrees and the Associate of Science Degree. Additionally, the Mississippi State Department of Education and the University Senate of the United Methodist Church accredit the university.

Rust has both a campus-based radio and television station: the WURC Radio and TV stations.  WURC-FM which is a non-commercial, educational, FCC approved radio station broadcasts 18 hours per day, 7 days per week year around.  RC-TV2 is the college’s owned and operated TV station.
